Alliant Techsystems Operations Awarded U.S. Army Contract for M230 30MM Automatic Gun

Alliant Techsystems Operations LLC, now Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems, was awarded a firm-fixed-price contract, worth $8 million, for the procurement of the M230 30MM automatic gun and the Bevel Gear.

Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of Nov. 19, 2024. U.S. Army Contracting Command (ACC(, Warren, Michigan, is the contracting activity.

The M230 Chain Gun is a 30 mm (30×113 mm), single-barrel chain-driven autocannon, originally designed and manufactured by Hughes Helicopters in Culver City, California.

The gun uses external electrical power (as opposed to recoil or expanding gas generated by the firing cartridge) to cycle the weapon between shots.

Hughes Helicopters was acquired by McDonnell Douglas Helicopters in 1985, which merged into Boeing Corporation in 1997. In 2002, it was sold again to Alliant Techsystems, which merged with Orbital Sciences Corporation in 2015 to form Orbital ATK and was, in turn, bought out by Northrop Grumman in 2018. As of now, it is produced by Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems.
