The Bahrain Coast Guard has received three new RB-M (Response Boat-Medium) coastal patrol boats from the US last week.
The boats, which are currently at Coast Guard Base Muharraq, were visited by a US delegation led by the Acting Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), David Pekoske, and US Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Margaret Nardi.
The three boats are the first delivery of a six-boat, $30 million order paid for in full by the US Government. A second delivery of three additional boats is planned for February.
The U.S. Coast Guard handed over the boats following two weeks of familiarization training for the Bahrain Coast Guard. The trainers covered basic maintenance and operating procedures. The boats were purchased under a U.S. State Department program to build partner nation capacity to stop illicit trafficking.
The RB-M vessels are widely used by U.S. Coast Guard personnel due to the boats’ speed and handling capability in as little as three feet of water, and a water jet propulsion system that can’t be entangled in nets or injure swimmers or marine life – always a concern with a spinning propeller. The boats are controlled by two joysticks rather than a traditional steering wheel.
The vessels include the latest low-light imaging technology for night patrols and enhanced air conditioning systems for the cabin to handle the high air and seawater temperatures around Bahrain. They are the first RB-Ms in use by a coast guard in the region and the first water jet propulsion boats in use by the Bahrain Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard has recently delivered two RB-Ms to the Royal Jordanian Naval Force (RJNF).
The Response Boat-Medium Tactical (RB-M Tactical) was developed as a commercial variant to the U.S. Coast Guard Response Boat-Medium (RB-M). The boat is designed by UK-based Camarc Design and manufactured by Team RB-M consisting of Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) and Vigor Industrial.
The RB-M Tactical for the Kingdom of Bahrain was fabricated with high temperature-resistant aluminum and outfitted with an Arabian Gulf hot weather package that includes a 92000 BTU HVAC system, thermal insulation, and an aft deck GRP canopy.
