Belarus to purchase Iskander tactical ballistic missiles from Russia

Belarus may buy 9K720 Iskander tactical ballistic missile systems from Russia, Ihar Petryshenka, Ambassador of Belarus to Russia said on Monday.

New weapons are expected to be used for protecting the airspace of the Union State, he told rbc.ru.

Belarus currently operates S-300 long range surface-to-air missile systems. The country has plans to purchase advanced S-400 systems in the future.

The Iskander-M is a mobile ballistic missile system designed to destroy a wide variety of ground targets at a range of up to 500 kilometers (over 300 miles). Serial production of the Iskander-M Tactical Ballistic Missile System was launched in 2006 and the system was adopted by the Russian army. The missile has the capability to constantly maneuver during the flight. Iskander is a potent offensive weapon system capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.

Interestingly Sergey Chemezov, director of the Russian state corporation Rostec,  said in June, 2016 that Russia had no intention to export Iskanders as the ballistic missile system was in the list of military products prohibited for export.

Last week, Belarus signed contract to purchase 12 Su-30SM fighters worth of $600 mn from Russia. It is still unclear how Belarus will pay for these systems since the purchase was not included in the 2017 state budget.
