Indian state-owned company, Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) delivered the first production Varunastra heavyweight torpedo to the Indian Navy.
Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Secretary R&D at Ministry of Defence and chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), flagged off the delivery of the Varunastra at a ceremony held at BDL, Visakhapatnam Unit on Saturday, Nov. 21.
Varunastra, developed by DRDO Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL) and manufactured by BDL at its Visakhapatnam Unit, is an advanced ship launched heavyweight anti-submarine torpedo.
The torpedo is equipped with variable speed facility at 20 and 40 Knots and is capable of successfully targeting quiet, anechoic submarines operating in shallow /deep waters in an intense Acoustic Counter Measure Environment. The Torpedo can be launched from all major class of ships which are in Indian Navy service.
