China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy has launched its first Type 075 amphibious assault ship during a ceremony at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding’s facility in Shanghai on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
During a brief ceremony starting at 9:20 am, the dry dock in which the ship’s hull was built was flooded.
The ceremony was attended by officials from the central and Shanghai governments, officers from the Central Military Commission’s Equipment Development Department and the PLA Navy, executives of the State-owned conglomerate China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC) as well as the vessel’s designers and construction workers.
The 35,000-ton landing helicopter dock (LHD) ship will now undergo equipment outfitting before conducting mooring tests and sea trials.
The Type 075 helicopter dock is a new generation of amphibious assault vessel and far larger than similar ships previously constructed for the PLA Navy like the 25,000-ton Type 071 amphibious transport dock (LPD) ships.
The Type 075 would give Chinese navy ability to deploy helicopters, landing craft and troops to attack enemy naval vessels, ground forces or submarines. The vessels will also be capable of conducting command and control operations.
