China unveils new heavy infantry fighting vehicle

China’s state-owned defence manufacturer, China North Industries Group Corporation (NORINCO) has unveiled a new infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) based on VT-5 tank chassis at the “Armor & Anti-armor” day organised by the company.

The new heavy IFV is named VN-17 and weighs around 30 tons. It reportedly has modular armour protection. Due to this, the protection level of the vehicle can be tailored to counter specific threats or to suit mission requirements. The mobility and protection of the vehicle are comparable to the latest VT-5 tanks.

The new IFV is equipped with an unmanned turret armed with a 30mm automatic cannon. The turret has panoramic sighting system and integrated gun-and-fire control system (FCS). The IFV is also armed with 2 HJ-12 anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM)
