The firm-fixed-price contract modification, worth around $10.5 million, was awarded by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) located in Washington, DC. This contract includes one option which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to around $10.6 million.
This contract involves foreign military financing to the state of Israel. Foreign military financing funding for the amount will be obligated at time of award and not expire at the end of the fiscal year.
The contract work will be performed in Detroit, Michigan (68 percent); and Prague, Czech Republic (32 percent), and is expected to be completed by December 2019.
Achzarit Heavy APC
Achzarit is a heavily armored personnel carrier (APC) manufactured by the Israeli Defence Forces Corps of Ordnance.
The Achzarit is based on the Soviet-built T-54/T-55 tank, beginning with those captured from Arab armies during the Arab–Israeli wars. The T55 hull was modified, upgraded and re-engineered in order to contain a powerful Nimda power pack 710HP DDC 8V92TA with Allison automatic transmission XTG 411-5A, and includes all other systems for operating and controlling the powerpack unit.
It is armed with three 7.62 mm machine guns, including one Rafael Overhead Weapons Station, a machine gun controlled from within the cabin, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. As a lesson from the Second Intifada, a bulletproof glass turret was installed over one of the hatches to enable the commander to see outside without being exposed to small arms fire and shrapnel.
Several Achzarit in service have been upgraded with a 12.7 mm Samson Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) in place of the standard 7.62 mm Rafael Overhead Weapon Station (OWS).
Because of its heavy armor, the Achzarit is sometimes called a Heavy APC (HAPC). Achzarit APCs are in service with the IDF Givati Brigade.
Achzarit APCs took part in Operation Rainbow in Rafah, after a comparatively lightly armored M113 APC was destroyed by an RPG. Achzarit APCs were also involved in the Gaza War.
