First Chinese Y-8F200WA Transport Aircraft of Kazakhstan National Guard Arrives in Astana

The first Chinese-built Shaanxi Y-8F200WA military transport aircraft of the National Guard of Kazakhstan has arrived in Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan, on Sept. 26.

The Y-8 aircraft took off from the Shaanxi Liugu Airport in Chenggu on Sept. 23 and arrived at the transit airport of Ürümqi in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region later the day. At Ürümqi, Kazakhstan officially took delivery of the aircraft from China’s Shanghai Aviation Industrial Company (SAIC).

The aircraft had undergone a two-day transition preparation and adjustment at the Ürümqi airport before arriving in Astana.

The construction of the first aircraft was officially started by the Shaanxi Aircraft Corporation at its facility in Hanzhong, Shaanxi province on Sept. 1, 2017. It successfully made its first flight on June 14, 2018.

The Kazakhstan National Guard has, in total, ordered eight Chinese-made Y- 8F200W military transport aircraft. According to an agreement between the Shanfei Aviation Industry and China Aviation International in Beijing, all orders will be delivered in the first quarter of 2019. This was the first time that a country belonging to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) had ordered a Y-8 airlifter.

The successful delivery of the first aircraft was an important achievement for the aviation industry group.

The Shaanxi Y-8 or Yunshuji-8 (Chinese: 运-8) aircraft is a medium size medium range transport aircraft produced by Shaanxi Aircraft Corporation in China, based on the Soviet Antonov An-12.

It has become one of China’s most popular military and civilian transport/cargo aircraft, with many variants produced and exported. Although the An-12 is no longer made in Ukraine, the Chinese Y-8 continues to be upgraded and produced.

The Y-8 is used for military and commercial operations. The aircraft is used for transporting troops, dropping supplies and functioning as an air ambulance. It is capable of hauling 20 tons of cargo, approximately 96 soldiers, or about 82 paratroopers in the cargo compartment which is 13.5 metres long, 3 metres wide and 2.4 metres high.

The Y-8F200WA has a 2.2m (7 ft 10in) stretched fuselage compared to the basic Shaanxi Y-8 airlifter.
