Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, FMV, has signed an agreement with Saab on system support for NH90 Tactical Mission System (TMS).
The NHIndustries NH90 helicopter is designated Helicopter 14, Hkp14, in Swedish service.
“This tactical mission system is the eyes, ears and brain of the helicopter and a prerequisite for being able to add the naval operational capability to Helicopter 14 and Sweden”, says Anna Kviblad, head of the FMV helicopter department.
The helicopter has an advanced mission system that includes various systems, such as a sonar system for submarine hunting which is developed and delivered by Saab. The TMS contract guarantees long-term cooperation and secures both competence and infrastructure at Saab and its subcontractors.
“This agreement means that we can maintain the ability, both concretely as part of Through Life Support and Obsolescence management, but also through future studies and development that secures the ability of Hkp14 for a long time to come”, says Anna Kviblad.
FMV acquired Hkp14 through an agreement with NATO Helicopter Industries, NHI. Of the 18 helicopters that Sweden has ordered, nine are purely land-based and are called HKP 14E. The remaining nine are called HKP 14F and are equipped with sonar equipment and tactical radar that can be used for submarine hunting.
In connection with the order, the Swedish Armed Forces also requested that the working height in the cabin of the Swedish helicopters be increased from 157 centimeters to 182, a modification that the manufacturer now markets as HCV (High Cabin Version).
