General Dynamics NASSCO wins contract in support of the T-AO 205 class AOR

General Dynamics, National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. (NASSCO) is being awarded a contract modification to exercise option for cost reduction and implementation studies in support of the T-AO 205 class fleet replenishment oilers.

The modification , worth around $11 million, was awarded by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) located in Washington, District of Columbia.

Work will be performed in San Diego, California, and is expected to complete by May 2022.  Fiscal 2016 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funding in the amount of $200,000 will be obligated at time of award.  Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, District of Columbia, is the contracting activity.

John Lewis-class/ T-AO 205 class oiler

John Lewis-class is a class of fleet replenishment oilers planned for U.S. Navy. They will be part of the Military Sealift Command (MSC) fleet of support ships. The first six ships of the class will be build by General Dynamics NASSCO.

The first six ships of the class will be named as USNS John Lewis (T-AO-205), USNS Harvey Milk (T-AO-206), USNS Earl Warren (T-AO-207), USNS Robert F. Kennedy (T-AO-208), USNS Lucy Stone (T-AO-209 and USNS Sojourner Truth (T-AO-210).

USNS John Lewis (T-AO-205) is the lead ship of the class. Construction of John Lewis is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2018. It is named for United States Representative and civil rights leader John Lewis. The contract price for John Lewis is around $640 million.

Designed to transfer fuel to U.S. Navy surface ships operating at sea, the oilers will have the capacity to carry 156,000 barrels of oil, including the Navy’s new bio fuels. The oilers also offer a significant dry cargo capacity, aviation capability and will reach a speed of 20 knots.

The John Lewis class will be equipped with a basic self defense capability, including crew served weapons, degaussing, and Nixie Torpedo decoys, and has space, weight, and power reservations for Close In Weapon Systems (CIWS) such as SeaRAMs, and a Anti-Torpedo Torpedo Defense System.
