A German Air Force A340 aircraft, called “Konrad Adenauer”, with chancellor Angela Merkel on board made an emergency landing at Cologne-Bonn airport due to technical malfunction.
Mrs Merkel was on her way to the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The plane reportedly turned back while flying over the Netherlands, because of a communications failure.
Following the incident, Mrs Merkel flew to Madrid on Friday on a different government aircraft before taking a scheduled Iberia airlines flight to Buenos Aires.
The Airbus A340-300 aircraft is named Konrad Adenauer after West Germany’s first post-war chancellor. The same aircraft was grounded in October because rodents had gnawed through electrical cables during an annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Indonesia which the finance minister Olaf Scholz participated.
