German Navy’s NH90 Sea Lion Helicopter Successfully Completes Mission Demonstration

The NH90 Sea Lion helicopter successfully completed mission demonstrations for its relevant roles in the German Navy, including SAR missions, in July.

Representatives of the Navy and the country’s procurement agency BAAINBw participated in the tests that covered operations using a rescue hoist, checking navy reconnaissance capabilities, and dropping off commandos and Special Forces equipment, including an inflatable boat.

Delivery of the first Sea Lion helicopters is scheduled for the end of 2019. Altogether 18 helicopters are on order, with the last due to go into service in 2022.

When deployed, it will take on a range of roles including search and rescue (SAR) missions, maritime reconnaissance, special forces missions as well as personnel and materiel transportation tasks. In addition to its land-based use in SAR missions, the NH90 Sea Lion is also intended to operate on Type 702 (Berlin class) combat support ships.
