HMAS Anzac Participates in Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo 2018

Royal Australian Navy Anzac-class frigate HMAS Anzac (FFH 150) has joined participants from 36 other nations for Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo 2018 off the coast of Lombok, Indonesia while in the region as part of their South East Asia deployment.

Anzac was one of 49 warships at anchor for a Fleet Inspection to mark the opening of Multilateral Naval Exercise KOMODO 2018.

At the Fleet Inspection, ship’s company lined the decks in ceremonial uniform and ‘cheered ship’ as the ‘Admiral’s Ship’ sailed past. The crew of Anzac’s embarked MH-60R Seahawk conducted a flyover with ten other helicopters and various fixed-wing aircraft to conclude the inspection. During the shore phase of KOMODO, sailors and officers from around the world are taking part in parades, cultural and sporting events, and engagement activities.

Commanding Officer HMAS Anzac, Commander Michael Devine, said the exercise was a valuable opportunity to work with other navies.

“Multilateral Naval Exercise KOMODO is about shared knowledge, shared communication and developing a relationship with our international friends and partners. On all levels, our participation contributes to our broader South East Asia Deployment mission objectives,” Commander Devine said.

For Able Seaman Communication Information Systems sailor Renee Tagliaferro, participation in KOMODO was a new experience.

“I’ve travelled to Indonesia several times but it’s amazing to see so many ships and navies come together for KOMODO. The South East Asia Deployment has also been enjoyable. I’ve had the opportunity to develop my career skills and the awesome experience of working with other navies.”

On completion of the shore phase, warships will conduct maritime exercises to improve interoperability for future operations. Australia is committed to developing strong and positive defence relations with regional nations through dialogue and practical activities.

Royal Australian Navy ships HMAS Anzac, HMAS Toowoomba (FFH 156) and HMAS Success (OR 304) are conducting a deployment to South East Asia and will conduct a series of exercises with nations in the region.
