Indian Coast Guard’s Second Batch 2 Samarth-Class Patrol Vessel, ICGS Sujeet, Launched

Indian state-owned shipbuilder, Goa Shipyard Ltd. (GSL) has launched the Indian Coast Guard’s second Batch 2 Samarth-class offshore patrol vessel (OPV), ICGS Sujeet (19), during a ceremony at its facility in Goa on May 25, 2019.

The vessel was ceremoniously launched by Ms. Seema Mittal, wife of Mr. Sanjiv Mittal, the Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA) at Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The ceremony was attended by Additional Director General (ADG) K Natarajan, Coast Guard Commander (Western Seaboard); Rear Admiral Philipose George Pynumootil, Indian Navy Flag Officer Commanding Goa Naval Area (FOGA) and Flag Officer Naval Aviation (FONA); Prabnav Nanda, Director General of Goa Police; Commodore BB Nagpal, Chairman & Managing Director of Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL); and various other senior dignitaries.

ICGS Sujeet is the second of the five OPVs ordered by the Indian Coast Guard under the 5-ship Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessel (CGOPV) project, which is a follow-on of earlier 6-ship CG OPV Project (Samarth-class OPVs) completed in 2017. All six Samarth-class vessels are in operation with the Coast Guard.

The contract for 5 OPVs was signed by GSL with Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) on 26th Aug. 2016 and commencement of production of first vessel was formally started within 3 months with formal steel cutting by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on 13th Nov. 2016.

The first vessel of the class, ICGS Sachet (18), was launched by Indian Defence Minister, Ms. Nirmala Seetharaman, during a ceremony at GSL facility in Goa on Feb. 21 this year. The keel for the first vessel was laid in March 2017.

These vessels for the Indian Coast Guard are based on in-house design of GSL and will be 105 metres long with a displacement of 2,350 tonnes. According to GSL, they are fitted with most modern and technologically advanced machinery and computerized controls systems, making them the most advanced Patrol Vessels in service with the Indian Coast Guard with delivery.

The hull would be the most efficient form designed by GSL and would provide for fuel efficiency, crew comfort and excellent sea keeping qualities, claims the shipbuilder. The ships will feature Integrated Bridge System (IBS), Integrated Machinery Control System (IMCS), Power Management System (PMS) and High Power External Fire Fighting System.

The OPVs are designed to carry one twin-engine light helicopter and five high speed boats including two Palfinger Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) for fast boarding operations, search and rescue (SAR), law enforcement and maritime patrol. The class is also capable of carrying pollution response equipment to combat oil spill contamination at sea.

The vessels of the class are scheduled to be delivered between Jan 2020 to Jun 2021.
