Indian made Ka-226T helicopters to cost twice that of imported ones

The unit cost of twin-engine Kamov Ka-226T ‘Hoodlum’ light utility helicopters that India plans on building indigenously for its armed forces is nearly double that of the ones it proposes to import in flyaway condition from Russia.

Industry officials estimate the cost of each Ka-226T helicopter produced under ToT in India at about USD11 million apiece, compared to about USD6 million for one manufactured in Russia.

They said this high price differential was primarily responsible for delays by Moscow in finalising the deal with the recently instituted India-Russia Helicopters Limited Company joint venture (JV) to supply 200 Ka-226T helicopters which the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army (IA)  require urgently to replace their vintage fleet of Cheetah and Chetak choppers for critical operations.
