The Indian Navy mobilised its Ilyushin Il-38 aircraft to transport critical medical supplies in support of the country’s fight against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak.
The aircraft transported a shipment of 60,000 face masks from Air Force Station Palam in New Delhi to INS Hansa in Goa on March 27.
The face masks ordered by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Goa to offset the shortfall in Goa were stuck at Delhi as trucks could not proceed further in the current situation of lockdown. So, a request for facilitating transportation of the masks to Goa was made by the President of IMA to the Indian Navy at Goa.
The Ilyushin Il-38SD is a long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft operated by the Indian Navy.
The Navy currently operates two Soviet-built Il-38SDs. The aircraft is complemented by the Navy’s newer Boeing P-8I Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.
