On Jan. 20 night, Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jets struck Iranian Quds Forces military targets in Syria in addition to Syrian aerial defense batteries, the service announced.
The attack was performed in response to a surface-to-surface rocket launch from Syrian territory aimed at the northern Golan Heights in Israel. The IAF’s “Iron Dome” aerial defense system intercepted the rocket.
The following military targets were struck as part of the IAF attack targeting the Iranian Quds military sites in Syria: munition storage sites and a site located in the Damascus International Airport, an Iranian intelligence site and an Iranian military training camp. During the strike, dozens of Syrian surface-to-air missiles were launched, despite clear warnings to avoid such fire. In response, several of the Syrian Armed Forces’ aerial defense batteries were targeted.
In firing towards Israeli territory yesterday, Iran once again offered definitive proof of its real intentions of its military entrenchment in Syria, which endangers the State of Israel and regional stability. The IDF will continue operating determinedly to thwart Iranian entrenchment in Syria.
“Our policy regarding the Iranian establishment in Syria hasn’t changed”
“This attack is an example of the risk taken by the Syrian government in keeping Iranians in the country”, said IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis. “The strikes were based on intelligence collected over time, and some of the Quds Force infrastructural targets attacked were inside the camps of Syrian brigades. We warned the Syrians regarding the use of any anti-aircraft munitions both before and during the attack. In practice, dozens of Syrian anti-aircraft missiles were launched towards our aircraft. As a result, the order was given to attack aerial defense targets”.
Brig. Gen. Manelis spoke of the Iranian missile launched yesterday towards the Golan Heights: “The firing of the missile yesterday, a launch that could have killed civilians, was fired by Iranians out of Damascus within an area in which we were promised that there would be no Iranians. The projectile was a standard Iranian-made missile, fired by Iranians. They have planned the event for a long time as part of their attempts to attack Israel. Our policy regarding the Iranian establishment in Syria hasn’t changed. We worked in coordination with the Russians according to the accepted procedures. We are preparing for all options, and have reinforcements both in defense and in offense”.
In addition, the IDF holds the Syrian regime responsible for everything taking place within Syria and warns the Syrian regime against targeting Israel or permitting it to be targeted. The IDF is prepared for a wide variety of scenarios and will continue operating as needed in order to defend Israeli civilians.
