Israeli defense company, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has unveiled its fifth-generation Spike multipurpose missile with a significant upgrades in range and capability.
According to a statement released Monday by the company, the Spike LR II “is an advanced multipurpose missile, weighing only 12.7 kg., and can be launched from any Spike launcher.”
The missile system is in full-scale development and scheduled to be operational by the end of 2018. Spike-LR II has reduced weight (by 10%), increased range (up to 5.5 km (3.4 mi), up to 10 km (6.2 mi)) from helicopters), increased armor penetration (by 30%) compared to the older Spike LR version. It have passive and uncooled multi-band seeker with IR and HD color imagery and the ability to fire the missile to grid target coordinates.
