L3 KEO Wins Contract Modification for Universal Modular Mast for Virginia-class SSNs

L3 KEO is being awarded a firm-fixed-price modification to previously awarded contract to exercise previously established options for the production of universal modular mast (UMM).

The contract modification, worth around $13 million, was awarded by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) located in Washington, District of Columbia. Fiscal 2018 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funding for the amount will be obligated at time of award and will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

The Universal Modular Mast (UMM) is a two-stage, non-hull-penetrating, telescopic submarine mast that hoists a variety of different sensors. The U.S. Navy’s Virginia-class fast attack submarines (SSN) each have a bank of eight of these sensor masts, while the Ohio-class cruise missile submarines (SSGN) each have banks of four UMMs.

L-3 KEO’s UMM serves as the lifting mechanism for Virginia-class submarine mast payloads – five different sensors, including the Photonics Mast, High Data Rate Mast, Multi-Functional Mast, Multi-Functional Modular Mast and the Integrated Electronics Support Measures Mast. The UMM system has proven to be a highly reliable and easy-to-use and -maintain system on board the Virginia-class submarines.

Work will be performed in Bologna, Italy (74 percent); and Northampton, Massachusetts (26 percent), and is expected to be completed by April 2020.


L3 KEO is the sole designer and manufacturer of all U.S. optronic mast systems and periscope systems.

In addition, L3 KEO has installed optronic masts or periscopes on several international platforms, including the TR1700, the T209, the Walrus, the A-19 and the Sauro-class submarines.

The optronic mast systems include precise, high-resolution electronic imaging and integrated sensor packaging. Integrated sensor optics can include ESM WE, DF, CPS or Communication Antennas, and low observables technology.

The periscope systems include precise, high-resolution optics, and integrated sensor packaging. Integrated sensor options can include ESM EW , DF, GPS, Communications Antennas, thermal imaging, low-light imaging or image intensified cameras, and low observables technology.

Calzoni, a subsidiary of L3 KEO, designs and manufactures submarine masts, including snorkel masts, as well as hull induction valves, gas exhaust valves and seawater hull valves.
