Leonardo Helicopters and its subsidiary Sistemi Dinamici selected L3 WESCAM to provide an innovative new UAV surveillance solution based on MX-10 EO/IR sensor, to be installed in their AWHERO Rotory UAV platform for maritime surveillance operations in the Mediterranean sea.
This new UAV solution will support a wide range of border and coast guard missions in Europe including environment protection, maritime safety and security, fisheries control, border control, law enforcement and customs.
L3 WESCAM MX-10
WESCAM’s MX 10 is a compact a Multi-Sensor, Multi-Spectral imaging system that’s ideal for surveillance missions from light aircraft. The MX-10 is flight proven from tactical mission levels on fixed-wing, rotary-wing and UAV platforms.
Its fully integrated weight is 37 pounds (16.8 kg), has a 10-inch (26 cm) diameter and stands 14 inches (36 cm) tall. This small size and low weight reduce the weight and clearance requirements for installation on manned and unmanned airborne platforms. The MX-10 can incorporate several different types of sensors (up to six), including high-definition daylight and infrared sensors.
The Wescam MX-10 thermal imaging system houses two cameras. A color camera used primarily during the day can read an object the size of a license plate from more than 750 feet away. The second camera, an infrared thermal imager, can be used during the day and at night. Infrared technology permits the flight crew to see objects that may otherwise go undetected at night.
Leonardo AWHERO Rotory UAV
The AWHERO is a state-of-the-art Short Range Tactical Rotary Unmanned Air Vehicle (RUAV), that incorporates the Leonardo Helicopter Division experience in the helicopter design and productions.
AWHERO design criteria reflects the state of the art of the international regulations and comply with both civil and military requirements; it is developed for land and maritime operations, where reliability and operational safety is paramount.
The AWHERO is the perfect low cost/low maintenance solution for civil, military and homeland security applications.
The System is equipped with a interoperable Ground Control Station (GCS) with an advanced Human Machine Interface. SW-4 ’Solo’/AWHERO common GCS provides also effective control of RUAV payloads and allows sensor data transmitted from the RUAV to be monitored. SW-4 ’Solo’/AWHERO common GCS can be deployed in different hardware configurations according to customer needs: desk mounted, transportable or standalone rugged for use in the field.
