L&T Delivers Final Fast Interceptor Craft C-454 to Indian Coast Guard

Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Shipbuilding delivered the 54th and final fast interceptor craft, ICGS C-454, to the Indian Coast Guard on Nov. 29, Business Standard reported.

ICGS C-454 was launched during a ceremony in Surat on August 19 this year. According to the Business Standard report, the delivery of the vessel was executed ahead of time and within the budget.

In 2010, L&T secured an order from the Coast Guard for 36 high speed interceptor boats for Rs. 977 crores (~USD132 million). It further secured an order in  2013 for 18 additional boats for Rs. 447 crore (~USD60 million). The contract is now concluded with the delivery of the final 54th boat.

L&T-Class Fast Interceptor Craft

L&T fast interceptor craft is a series of high-speed interceptor boats built by L&T Shipyard for the Indian Coast Guard. They are designed by the L&T Marine & Ship Design Division, an in-house facility of Larsen & Toubro Limited.

The vessels are 30 metres long with 90 tonnes displacement and can achieve a maximum speed of 45 knots. The interceptor boats have full aluminum-alloy hull for reduced weight and are powered by twin water-jet propulsion systems to enable quick response.

The FICs are powered by two Caterpillar Marine Power Systems 3516C marine propulsion engines (2525 bkW @ 1800 rpm, ‘D’ Rating) and two C-4.4 auxiliary generator sets (86 eKW @ 1500 rpm). The water-jets for the high-speed interceptor boats are being supplied by MJP Waterjets. Delivery of the water-jets began in 2010 and will continue until 2013.They are also fitted with MARIS ECDIS900 SmartLine Mk10 Flat Panel Computer with radar kit.

The boats are fitted with state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment and medium-range armament.

The vessel’s crew consists of one officer and eleven personnel and are intended for patrol and rescue operations in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The vessels can perform coastal surveillance, search and rescue (SAR), anti-smuggling and anti-poaching operations in close coast and can also operate effectively in shallow water.
