Martin-Baker Completes 600th US16E Ejection Seat for F-35 Program

Martin-Baker has completed the 600th US16E ejection seat for the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Program, the company announced.

This particular seat is part of the Lockheed Martin LRIP XII contract destined for F-35A aircraft AF-244, being assembled at Lockheed Martin’s Fort Worth, Texas facility.

By the end of 2020, Martin-Baker will have manufactured and delivered a further 180 US16E Seats for the F-35 program.

The ejection seats are being delivered to the three F-35 production lines: to Lockheed Martin facility in Fort Worth, USA; Leonardo Final Assembly & Check-Out (FACO) facility in Cameri, Italy and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) FACO in Nagoya, Japan.

The US16E ejection seat is a further development of the Martin-Baker’s Mk16 range that has already been successful with the T-6 Texan II trainer jet, Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft, NASA T-38N, and USAF T-38 upgrade programs and other numerous aircraft platforms around the world.

The ejection seat provides an unprecedented balanced optimization between key performance parameters such as safe terrain clearance limits, physiological loading limits, pilot boarding mass, and anthropometric accommodation ranges to fully meet the F-35 Escape System requirements. It is the only Qualified Ejection Seat that meets the US Government defined Neck Injury Criteria (NIC) across the pilot accommodation range.

The US16E will be common to all F-35 aircraft variants – the F-35A conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant, the F-35B short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) variant, and the F-35C carrier-based catapult-assisted take-off but arrested recovery (CATOBAR) variant.

Martin-Baker delivered the 500th F-35 US16E ejection seat to Lockheed Martin in early 2019.
