Oshkosh Defense Receives $911 Million Order for Joint Light Tactical Vehicles, JLTV Trailers

The U.S. Army Contracting Command (ACC) Detroit Arsenal has placed an order with Oshkosh Defense for 2,738 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTV), 1,001 companion trailers, and associated kits, the company announced Dec. 1.

This is the second largest order of Oshkosh Defense JLTVs, with a contract value of $911 million. Under the order, the JLTV vehicles will be supplied to the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), and U.S. Air Force (USAF) along with 59 vehicles for NATO and non-NATO allies including Lithuania, North Macedonia, and Brazil.

The Oshkosh Defense JLTV is designed for the future battlefield with reconfiguration capabilities to meet the demands of the Warfighter’s evolving mission requirements. It offers the world’s only light tactical vehicle with the protection, off road mobility, network capability and firepower options to maneuver with combat formations.

“The men and women of Oshkosh Defense take great pride in what they do,” said George Mansfield, Vice President and General Manager of Joint Programs for Oshkosh Defense. “Designing, building, and delivering the world’s most capable light tactical vehicle, the Oshkosh JLTV, is one of our greatest accomplishments. And we plan to continue building the Oshkosh JLTV for many years to come.”

Joint Light Tactical Vehicle ( JLTV)

The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle ( JLTV) program is a United States military (specifically U.S. Army, USSOCOM, and U.S. Marine Corps) program to part-replace the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV, Humvee) fleet with a family of more survivable vehicles with greater payload.

Oshkosh’s L-ATV was selected as the winner of the JLTV program in August 2015 and awarded an initial production contract for up to 16,901 JLTVs.

The JLTV family now consists of three base vehicle platforms – Utility (JLTV-UTL), Close Combat Weapons Carrier (JLTV-CCWC) and General Purpose (JLTV-GP)- and four configurations based on specific Mission Packages – M1278 Heavy Guns Carrier – General Purpose (JLTV-GP), M1279 JLTV-UTL, M1280 JLTV-GP, and M1281 JLTV-CCWC.

The U.S. Army approved the JLTV for full-rate production in June 2019 and the vehicle achieved initial operational capability (IOC) with the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) next month. The U.S. Navy and Air Force are also fielding JLTVs albeit in much smaller quantities.
