Pakistan Navy frigate, PNS Saif visits Shanghai, China

The Pakistan Navy’s F-22P Zulfiquar-class frigate, PNS Saif (253) arrived at a military port in Wusong, Shanghai on the morning of Nov. 30 for a five-day visit to Shanghai.

This is the maiden visit of PNS Saif to Shanghai and the eighth visit by a Pakistani naval vessel.

On the afternoon of their arrival, a team of Pakistani naval officers headed by Captain Shahzad Iqbal, commanding officer of the PNS Saif, called on Rear Admiral Wang Jianxun, commander of a base of the PLA Navy’s East China Sea Fleet, and leaders of the Foreign Affairs Office of Shanghai Municipal Government. The Chinese side held a welcome reception for the PNS Saif that evening.

During Saif’s stay in Shanghai, officers and men of the two navies visited each other’s vessel and hold friendship basketball matches and the Pakistan Navy also held a deck reception.

The visiting Pakistani frigate and the Chinese frigate Jinzhou will hold a two-day maritime joint exercise in the sea area of the East China Sea.

Before coming to Shanghai, the frigate Saif was in Pattaya, Thailand from Nov. 16 to 21 for participation in the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN and International Fleet Review (IFR-2017) organized by Royal Thai Navy (RTN).

Saif has a complement of 273, including 35 officers and 238 sailors.

F-22P Zulfiquar-class

F-22P Zulfiquar-class frigate is a class of frigates, based on Chinese Type 053H3, currently in service with the Pakistan Navy (PN).

The primary role of this class is air defense, enemy interdiction and patrolling the economic exclusive zone (EEZ).

They are equipped with a 76.2 mm calibre main gun, a Type 730B close-in weapon system (CIWS), two 6-cell RDC-32 anti-submarine rocket launchers, a FM-90N surface-to-air missile (SAM) system and two quad-cell launchers armed with C-802 subsonic anti-ship missiles or CY series anti-submarine rockets.

The ship carries a Harbin Z-9EC anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter. Z-9 is equipped with a surface-search radar, low frequency dipping sonar, radar warning receiver, doppler navigation system and armed with torpedoes.

The third frigate of the Zulfiquar class, PNS Saif was built at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai, China and was handed over to Pakistan Navy on 15 Sept. 2010.
