Pentagon Identifies U.S. Army Casualties in Afghan IED Attack

The U.S. Department of Defense identified the two U.S. Army soldiers who were killed in action in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan on Jan. 11 when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED).

The deceased were identified as Staff Sgt. Ian P. McLaughlin, 29, of Newport News, Virginia, and Pfc. Miguel A. Villalon, 21, of Joliet, Illinois. Both soldiers were assigned to 307th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

During the IED attack, the soldiers were conducting operations as part of NATO’s Resolute Support Mission in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

The incident is under investigation, said a Pentagon statement.
