Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems has received a contract modification from the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) for continued low-rate initial production (LRIP) of the AN/APQ-187 Silent Knight Radar (SKR) system.
This indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract modification, worth around $97 million, increases the contract ceiling from around $203 million to $300 million.
The radars are to to be installed on special operations aircraft operated by the USSOCOM. These aircraft are used for special operation forces (SOF) support, clandestine personnel insertion and extraction, combat search and rescue (CSAR), and tactical aircraft and personnel recovery missions.
Fiscal 2019 procurement funds in the amount of $54.72 million are being obligated at time of contract modification. The remaining costs will be funded via delivery/task orders, and depending on the requirement, may be funded using research, development, test and evaluation; procurement; or operations and maintenance funding. The ordering period is valid for five years.
The contract work will be performed in McKinney and Forest, Mississippi, and is scheduled to be completed by October 2022.
AN/APQ-187 Silent Knight Radar
AN/APQ-187 Silent Knight Radar (SKR) is a multi-mode terrain-following/terrain avoidance (TF/TA) radar developed by Raytheon for the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM).
The radar allow airborne forces to conduct safe low-level flight and safe ingress and egress in adverse environments. The system also provides navigation support, ground mapping and weather information to air crews. The radar includes advances in terrain following and avoidance capabilities and is lighter and require less power than its predecessors.
The SKR program was initiated to develop TF/TA radar for MH-47G Chinook and MH-60M Black Hawk special operations helicopters assigned to the U.S. Army’s elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (160th SOAR), nicknamed “Night Stalkers”.
The program was led by Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems with AIC, DRS Technologies and Rockwell Collins as principal partners.
Later, the radar were also installed on CV-22B Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft and MC-130J Commando II special mission aircraft operated by the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The radar is also in use on several other fixed-wing aircraft types operated by the USSOCOM.
