Russian Helicopters, part of Rostec State Corporation, has conducted the maiden flight of the upgraded Mil Mi-26T2V heavy-lift helicopter, the company announced, Sunday.
The helicopter performed its first flight at the flight test center of Rostvertol, a company under Russian Helicopters, located in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, according to the company’s press service.
The prototype aircraft, manufactured by Rosvertol, will be showcased at the ARMY 2018 International Military and Technical Forum to be held at the Sverdlovsky training ground in the Moscow region on August 21-26. The preliminary flight tests will be conducted by the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant after the exhibition and the state trials conducted by the Russian military will follow afterwards.
Delivery of the new upgraded helicopters to the Russian Armed Forces will be carried out under the state armament program for 2018-2027, according to Anatoly Serdyukov, the Industrial Director of Rostec’s Aviation Division.
The upgraded Mi-26T2V helicopter will have a lifting capacity of 20 tonnes, and is able to airlift large equipment, large size cargoes and paratroopers.
The new Mi-26T2V features modern integrated avionics, digital flight controls, multi-function color displays and a new Vitebsk airborne defence complex. The helicopter is also fitted with modern NPK90-2 integrated onboard radio-electronic equipment and an onboard defensive aids system (DAS) to protect the helicopter against missiles of various homing types.
According to the company, Mi-26T2V will be able to perform missions even in regions with complex physical and geographic features and unfavorable climatic conditions day and night over featureless terrain amid enemy counter-fire and information counter-measures.
Mi-26Ts in various modifications are widely used to perform a variety of tasks – for transporting, evacuations, firefighting and other missions around the world. Operated by both military and civilian operators, it is the largest and most powerful helicopter to have gone into series production. It is capable of transporting up to 20 tons of cargo inside the body or on an external sling.
