Russian Army Reconnaissance Units to Receive More Than 15 Tigr-M Armored Vehicles This Year

The Russian Army reconnaissance units will receive more than 15 Tigr-M armored vehicles with the Arbalet-DM remote-controlled combat module this year.

The delivery is part of the state defense order, according to a statement from the Russian Defence Ministry.

The GAZ Tigr (“Tiger”) is a Russian 4×4, multipurpose, all-terrain infantry mobility vehicle manufactured by GAZ, first delivered to the Russian Army in 2006. Primarily used by the Russian Armed Forces, the vehicle is also used by numerous other countries.

The Tigr is designed for transporting personnel and various cargo on roads and rough terrain. In addition, the vehicle can be used for the mounting of special tools and equipment.

The Tigr-M variant features new YaMZ-534 diesel engine, a new armored hood, air filter installation, an increase in the number of rear passenger seats (from 8 to 9) and the replacement of the bicuspid rear hatch with a large square hatch.

The Arbalet-DM remote-controlled combat module [remote weapon station (RWS)] is intended for mounting on wheeled and tracked armored vehicles, surface vessels, and fixed platforms for protection. It is fully stabilized and has the ability to capture and automatically track the target, which allows the operator to fire both in stationary conditions as well as on the move.

The RWS can hold a Kord 12.7 mm machine gun carrying 150 rounds of ammunition or a PKTM 7.62 mm machine gun carrying 250 rounds. The module has a TV and thermal imaging cameras allowing target identification out to 2.5 km and 1.5 km respectively, an integral laser rangefinder, and the ability to lock on and track targets.

The Army reconnaissance units will also be equipped with portable radars “Aistenok” and “Fara-VR” for radar reconnaissance of targets and enemy firing positions. All samples of equipment and weapons have successfully proven themselves in operation in various climatic zones.
