Russian Su-27 Fighter Jets Intercept Two U.S. Military Aircraft Over Black Sea

Russia has scrambled its Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jets to intercept two U.S. military reconnaissance aircraft over the Black Sea on June 29.

According to a statement from the Russian National Defense Management Center (NTsUO), the Southern Military District air defence duty personnel detected and escorted a U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and a U.S. Air Force RC-135 strategic reconnaissance aircraft over the neutral waters of the Black Sea.

The statement said that the U.S. planes were continuously followed by Russia’s radar monitoring equipment at a considerable distance from the Russian state border adding that no violation of the border was recorded.

“The flights of the Russian fighters were conducted in strict compliance with international regulations”, the Russian Defence Ministry added.

This is the second intercept of U.S. military aircraft by Russian fighter jet in the past three days.

On June 26,  a Russian Navy Su-30 “Flanker” aircraft assigned to the Black Sea Fleet naval aviation from the air defense duty forces of the Southern Military District were scrambled to intercept U.S. reconnaissance aircraft over Black Sea. The U.S. aircraft intercepted included a USAF RC-135 aircraft, a USAF KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft and a Navy P-8A Poseidon.
