The second C-27J Spartan tactical airlifter ordered by the Slovak Air Force from Leonardo has arrived in the country, Slovak Ministry of Defence announced.
The Air Force of the Armed Forces of the Slovak have already two transport aircraft of this type. The official technical transfer of the new aircraft will take place in the coming days.
“I am very glad that today, the acquisition of Spartan transport aircraft has reached a successful end. Our armed forces are once again fully technically equipped to fulfill larger-scale transport tasks, which means that we can gradually secure the transport of soldiers and material in our direction. Of course, these aircraft will also be ready to carry out the tasks of domestic and international crisis management”, said Defense Minister Peter Gajdoš.
He added that the first C-27J Spartan airlifter, which has been operated by the Slovak Air Force since the end of last year, is already fulfilling its tasks related to the transport of equipment and material to Slovak soldiers operating in the peacekeeping operation in Cyprus.
According to Gen. Milan Maxim, the Chief of the General Staff of Slovakia, the training of the Spartan crews will continue so that they will be able to use all the capabilities at the latest in September this year. “In the case of the first aircraft, crews are already trained and prepared. It remains for them to fly for about eight hours for some special matters”, said General Maxim.
General Secretary of the Office of the Ministry of Justice Ján Hoľko stressed that the modernization of the armed forces will continue in the sense of the Long-term Plan. “The public has the opportunity to get acquainted with it, with investments up to € 30 billion scheduled for 2030,” he said.
The procurement of the two C-27J Spartan dates back to 2008, when a contract for delivery of the aircraft was awarded in an international competitive bidding (ICB) process. But it was not until 2014 that the contract was formally signed. The contract covers the initial 5-year logistics support package.
