The Turkish Armed Forces has taken delivery of six additional Bayraktar TB2 medium altitude long-range (MALE) armed drones, the Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB) announced.
Bayraktar TB2 (Tactical Block 2) is a Turkish unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) developed by the Kale-Baykar joint venture between the Kale Group and Baykar Technologies. It is developed from Bayraktar tactical surveillance and reconnaissance unmanned aircraft.
With its 650 kg MTOW and 12 meters wingspan platform powered by a 100hp internal combustion engine, Bayraktar can fly up to an altitude of 27,000 feet and loiter for more than 24 hours.
Bayraktar TB2 UAV can carry a maximum payload of more than 55kg. The standard payload configuration includes an electro-optical (EO) camera module, an infrared (IR) camera module, a laser designator, a laser range finder (LRF) and a laser pointer. The armed TB2 platform can carry low-weight laser seeker Smart Micro Munition (MAM-L) and MAM-C smart munitions, the smaller version of “Cirit” missile, developed by Roketsan, on wing pylons.
Each Bayraktar TB2 system consists of six aerial vehicles, two ground control stations (GCS), three ground data terminals (GDTs), two remote video terminals (RVTs) and ground support equipment.
On Sept. 8, 2016, the Bayraktar TB2 recorded its first kill, during an operation against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The UCAV completed 60,000 flight hours in Sept. this year, reaching an average monthly utilization rate of 4,500 hours.
