Two U.S. Special Forces Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan

The U.S. Department of Defense announced the deaths of two soldiers in Faryab Province, Afghanistan as a result of wounds sustained from small arms fire while engaged in combat operations on August 21.

The deceased were identified as Master Sgt. Luis F. DeLeon-Figueroa, 31, of Chicopee, Massachusetts and Master Sgt. Jose J. Gonzalez, 35, of La Puente, California. Both soldiers were posthumously promoted as as Master Sgts and were assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) of the U.S. Army Special Forces based at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.

The Green Berets were supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel in Afghanistan. Operation Freedom’s Sentinel is part of the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission and its primary focus “will include two core components: working with allies and partners on Resolute Support, and continuing “counterterrorism operations against the remnants of Al-Qaeda to ensure that Afghanistan is never again used to stage attacks against our homeland”.

The incident is under investigation.
