U.S. Air Force Seeks Additional Bombardier Global 6000 Aircraft For BACN Program

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) has released a Sources Sought Notice to procure one new Bombardier Global 6000 aircraft in a ‘green’ configuration for the Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) program.

The notice was issued from the Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) program office within Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC).

According to the notice, the contractor shall equip and deliver the aircraft, with only the configurations listed below, to the BACN (AFLCMC/HNAB) Program Office.

1. The aircraft shall conform to the following Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) specifications.

+ ST00046MC-D: A-kit (23 antennas, cables, TCDL radome)
+ ST00045MC-D: B-kit provisions (kill switch, seat tracks, INMARSAT provisions, etc.)
+ ST00044MC-D: Cockpit ARC-210 (radio, antenna)
+ ST00043MC-D: Interior (lavatory, galley, crew rest seats)
+ ST03203CH-D: Cockpit Furnishings
+ ST00136MC: ADS-B Out Inhibit
+ ST03199NY / ST02186NY: Electronic Flight Bags (COTS)
+ ST00941LA: Bruce Inc. Floor Path Lighting (COTS)
+ ST02167NY: Insulation blankets (COTS)

2. The aircraft configuration shall also include aircraft markings and paint.

Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN)

The Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) is a U.S. Air Force (USAF) airborne communications relay and gateway system carried by the unmanned EQ-4B (variant of Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk) and the manned Bombardier E-11A (Bombardier Global Express) aircraft.

BACN enables real-time information flow across the battlespace between similar and dissimilar tactical data link and voice systems through relay, bridging, and data translation in line-of-sight and beyond-line-of-sight situations. Its ability to translate between dissimilar communications systems allows them to interoperate without modification.

Because of its flexible deployment options and ability to operate at high altitudes, BACN can enable air and surface forces to overcome communications difficulties caused by mountains, other rough terrain, or distance. BACN provides critical information to all operational echelons and increases situational awareness by correlating tactical and operational air and ground pictures.
