U.S. Approves Sale of F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, F-35 Lightning II Fighter Aircraft to Switzerland

The U.S. State Department approved a possible sale of F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and F-35 Lightning II fighter aircraft to Switzerland.

The sale is being executed through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD)’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which oversees FMS sales, delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale on Sept. 30.

Boeing’s Super Hornet and Lockheed Martin’s F-35A, the Conventional Take Off and Landing (CTOL) variant of F-35, are two of the four fighter aircraft competing for the Swiss Air Force’s Air 2030 fighter replacement program. The other contenders are Eurofighter Typhoon (Airbus, Germany) and Dassault Rafale (France). F-35A is a stealth fifth generation jet fighter while the remaining are 4++ generation fighter jets.

One of these aircraft will be selected for the program with the contract expected to be finalized by 2021. The new jets will replace Swiss Air Force’s aging F/A-18C/D Hornet and the F-5E/F Tiger II fighter aircraft fleet by 2030.

This month, Swiss voters approved a CHF6 billion ($6.49 billion) ceiling funding package for the procurement of new fighter jets for the Swiss Air Force. In a surprisingly close referendum, just 50.1% of the roughly three million voters who cast ballots approved the purchase. The margin between the sides were fewer than 9,000 votes.

F/A-18E/F Super Hornet Sales Package (estimated cost is $7.452 billion):

This proposal is being offered in the context of a competition. The purchaser typically requests offsets.
