Upgraded Tu-22M3M Strategic Bomber Performs First Flight

Russia’s upgraded Tu-22M3M strategic bomber successfully conducted its first flight, PJSC United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) announced.

According to the statement, the flight took place at an altitude of 1500 meters and lasted 37 minutes. The systems and equipment worked normally, the statement added.

Tupolev Tu-22M (NATO reporting name: Backfire) is a supersonic, variable-sweep wing, long-range strategic and maritime strike bomber developed by the Soviet Tupolev Design Bureau.

    One upgrade won’t rescue this antique aircraft
    – the upgrades to the “Backfire” are too few
    – too inadequate for accurate missile targeting
    – the Backfire is too old [ca 1983], too slow
    – too hard to maintain
    – too easy to find and hit
    – and too few in number
    – to be a threat to anyone
    – except the Russian military budget
    – which is about $60 billion vs NATO’s approx $1 trillion
